The Ó Máille family originally came from Portacarron near Oughterard which accounted for their Irish speaking background. Their landlord, Mrs Annie Nolan evicted them from their holding and they spent a number of years in temporary accommodation. When Mrs Nolan’s son wanted to run in an election, Isaac Butt, the Irish Parliamentary Party leader stipulated that his nomination would not be ratified until such time as his mother reinstated her evicted tenants and so the Ó Máille family were awarded a fine farm holding in Brackloon in the parish of Corofin, east of the Corrib.

Aran Islands teacher to co-present new TG4 plant-based cooking series

TG4’s new cookery show for January is the first of its kind on Irish television. Planda go Pláta is a beautiful series that celebrates plant-based cooking. Inis Meáin will celebrate the blackberry harvest this Saturday with Féile na bPuiteachaí, a festival named for the islanders’ unique Irish word, puiteachaí, which is used on Inis Meáin instead of the more commonly heard word for blackberries, sméara dubha.

Locals asked to conserve water on Inis Oírr to ensure normal daytime supply

Uisce Éireann and Galway County Council are reminding customers on Inis Oírr to conserve water as essential overnight water restrictions are being introduced in order to maintain reservoir levels on the island. The restrictions will be in place nightly from 11pm until 7am and started yesterday (Wednesday)
